Why no Kojic Acid formulations?

Kojic acid has become a very popular ingredient in products marketed for dark spots, hyperpigmentation and skin brightening. It works by interfering with an enzyme involved in melanin production, which is why it can help reduce the appearance of excess pigmentation.

But effective does not automatically mean appropriate for everyone.

Kojic acid can cause irritation, redness, itching, dryness and contact dermatitis in some people, particularly when used at higher concentrations or too frequently. And when skin becomes irritated or inflamed, people with melanin-rich skin can sometimes be left with the very problem they were trying to correct: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

There is another concern we think is worth mentioning,  that is , the desire for faster results.

Dark spots rarely disappear overnight. When one brightening product doesn't work quickly enough, it can be tempting to use more, apply it more often, or combine several strong actives. This can compromise the skin barrier and create an ongoing cycle of irritation and pigmentation.

Our Philosophy Is Different

At Scents of Tobago, we believe skincare should work with the skin rather than wage war against it.

We prefer to explore botanicals, nourishing oils and thoughtfully formulated ingredients that support healthy-looking skin while respecting the skin barrier. Nature is powerful, but natural ingredients must also be selected and formulated responsibly—"natural" does not automatically mean harmless.

We are also careful about the language of skin lightening.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to improve a dark mark, an old blemish or an area of uneven pigmentation. But healthy skincare should not teach us that our natural skin colour needs to be corrected.

Our approach is therefore less about "How quickly can we lighten the skin?" and more about:

How can we care for the skin, protect its barrier, address the causes of uneven pigmentation and encourage a healthy, even-looking complexion over time?

Sometimes the gentler road is the slower road.
